There is no Sorrento peninsula’s inhabitant who does not know the Punta Campanella’s legend. Told by grandparents or learned at school, the legend is part of the popular Sorrento’s culture.
As the name suggests, the etymology is tied to a bell.
A version says that once, on the Tower of Minerva, goddess worshiped in this place, was placed a bell which was rung in case of emergency.
While a more imaginative version says about the threatening pirates Saracen that in one of their incursions, plundered the Sorrento peninsula, pillaging its most precious treasures, including the bell of the saint patron’s church, Saint Anthony. But, when the ship arrived in Punta Campanella for some mysterious reason the ship stopped.
Only when the Pirates halt the bell, the wind began to blow taking them to safety. The bell was never recovered, but some people swear that every 14th of February, the patron saint’s celebration day, you can hear the distant echo of the bell buried in the seabed.
It seems like a movie tale. Films like the ones that will be featured in the cinema days in Sorrento.
